- Information provided through the monthly training update is intended to inform the Scouting community of the latest training information. Council and district trainers should be encouraged to regularly monitor this site for up-to-date training information. Beginning last month, we are archiving previous monthly updates. They can be found in the upper left-hand corner of this page.
- Registration for the Philmont Training Center, NAYLE, and the Philmont Leadership Challenge is now open. The PTC brochure can be found at the top of the training page along with a new video about Philmont. A new video about NAYLE will also be available soon. This year the invitation process has changed, and all registered Scouters are now invited to attend and bring their family. A few of the new courses are Scouting and Cyberspace, Cub Scouts 2010, Boys - The Development Stages, and Planning and Conducting a University of Scouting.
- Introduction to Outdoor Skills for Boy Scout leaders is being revised. The new outdoor course will be a one-size-fits-all for Webelos leaders, Boy Scout leaders, and Venturing leaders. Once a person completes the training, it is not necessary to repeat it when they move to another program. BALOO will remain as a training aid as it focuses more on safety than on outdoor skills.
- Both the AFL-CIO and VFW offer scholarships for Wood Badge to their members. The applications can be downloaded from the training page. Applications must be postmarked no later than March 31, 2010.
- Effective Jan. 1, 2010, the processing of applications for Wood Badge, NYLT, Powder Horn, and Kodiak will all be handled through the Volunteer Development Team at the national office. This will involve some new procedures, but we hope it will provide better service to councils in the long run.
- The Volunteer Development Team has added a new staff member as of Jan. 1, 2010. Ronald Timmons has joined the team with Chris Smith and Joe Glasscock. Ron was formerly the director of field services in New York City.
- Several task forces are hard at work on the Cub Scouts 2010 project, and it is projected to be rolled out in March 2010. You can expect a change in program delivery as it will be more achievement- and advancement-driven. Training for Cub Scout leaders will be available on CD and online.
